Horse Meat Confirmed
One out of ten samples the Veterinary and Food Board sent to Germany over two weeks ago has now been discovered to contain unlabeled horse meat.
The Estonian board found horse meat in the product named “Beef stewed military quality,” produced by another Latvian company, “Kursu Zeme”, said the board in a press release today.
Supermarkets in the country suspended sales of canned pork, beef and chicken produced by Rēzeknes Gaļas Kombināts of Latvia, after Lithuania's veterinary and food board found small amounts of horse meat in one of its products.
No unlabeled meat was discovered in the nine other samples, including burger patties from Sweden, Poland and Ireland, pasta sauce from Italy, Polish minced (ground) meat and canned beef from France and products made by Latvian company Rēzeknes Gaļas Kombināts.
The "contaminated" cans were sold in Maxima supermarkets.
