Skype co-founder's open letter signed by Hawking and Musk
An open letter drawn up by the Future of Life Institute and calling for robust and beneficial harnessing of artificial intelligence has been signed by visionaries Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, among others.
The open letter says AI is developing rapidly and expansion in the field has so far been "neutral with respect to purpose." “We recommend expanded research aimed at ensuring that increasingly capable AI systems are robust and beneficial: our AI systems must do what we want them to do,“ reads a letter.
The Future of Life Institute was founded by Jaan Tallinn, an Estonian who was instrumental in founding Skype and Kazaa, and four others. Tallinn has become a cautionary voice on artificial intelligence, saying it could pose a threat to humanity.
Hawking, Musk as well as actor Morgan Freeman sit on the institute's Scientific Advisory Board.
