The weekend saw a first for Estonia and the entire Baltic region: a flyover on a commuter railway was built in just 48 hours.

The structure on the Keila-Pääsküla segment just outside the city means one fewer level-grade crossing in the capital region. Cars and trucks will pass below the rail line, ETV reported.

Nordecon railway engineer Arto Lille: "Currently all of the traffic goes over the Laagri crossing, and since train traffic is very frequent and often barrier arms are down, there is a great loss of time."

The overpass was painstakingly moved into place on supporting gantries. ETV likened the work to assembling a Lego structure. Rails and carriageways have yet to be laid.

The engineering and design part of the project was launched in 2005 and the work is expected to be completed in October.
