Marine Scientists Review London Convention in Tallinn
On April 11, scientists met in Tallinn for the 34th international meeting of the London Convention.
During the week-long gathering, 60 marine scientists from across the world will review dumping regulations and other measures for protecting marine habitats from pollution.
Alongside Finland and Lithuania, Estonia is currently working to adopt the London Convention.
"The Baltic Sea, with its sensitive ecosystem, needs special protection," said Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus in her opening speech. "An effective protection of the sea can be organized only with the cooperation of all countries."
The minister said anti-pollution measures developed during the meeting will be included in Estonia's maritime strategy.
The London Convention was established in 1972 to prevent maritime pollution. The convention has been enforced in 86 countries, and an amended version has been adopted by 37 countries.
