The Estonian Competition Authority is investigating Elering, the electricity grid operator, after both its high-voltage connections with Finland failed.

The Estlink 1 and 2 cables both failed two weeks ago, with Estlink 2 now again operational.

“The simultaneous failure of both links has meant a significant price increase for customers. For that reason the authority will investigate if Elering's actions have been in line with egulations,” Märt Ots, the head of the authority, said.

The investigation will focus on the reasons of the failures. It will also ask whether the failures could have been prevented.

Estlink 2 was switched back on on Sunday, but it will need further rapair work once Estlink 1 is operational again.

Electricity prices in Estonia on the NordPoolSpot energy market, increased from around 37 euros per megawatt hour on September 9 to 65 euros two days later.
