Second Operator Launches 4G
Two of the three major wireless operators now offer the latest mobile ultra-broadband standard.
Tele2 today opened their 4G network, second to EMT, who have a two-year head start in fourth generation communications.
The network will become usable by 4G phones sometime in 2013 while USB mobile data devices can already access the network. Coverage is limited to greater Tallinn, said Tele2 in a statement on November 27.
The advance was made possible with the construction of 150 transmitting stations. EMT currently has twice the number of stations.
Tele2 claims their prices are lower than EMT's, with the cheapest internet package costing 10 euros in a month, compared to EMT's 15.94 euros a month. While EMT sets no volume limits on any of their packages, Tele2 limits it to 5 gigabytes, which comes down to 166 megabytes a day. An average 15-minute HD video streaming session uses up 90 megabytes of bandwidth. Tele2 currently offers no package with unlimited data volume.
Elisa will follow with their 4G network in the beginning of 2013, reported uudised.err.ee.
