The Police and Border Guard has signed a deal to replace its Soviet era Makarov handguns with German Walther P99Q weapons.

The first shipment of 250 weapons will be delivered to the force by March, Radar, the police's newsletter said.

The P99Q is specially designed for police work and is used by German and Finnish police forces.

The state initially planned to replace the Makarov PMs with SIG Sauer handguns in 2004 but that plan was shelved due to a lack of resources.
