Kontaveit beats top 35 player in US Open 2nd round
Estonia's up-and-coming tennis player Anett Kontaveit (WTA 152) beat Russian Anastasia Pavlychenkova (WTA 31) in the second round of the US Open. Kontaveit also beat a top 80 player in the first round.
The game against Pavlychenkova was not easy for Kontaveit, although the 19-year-old took the lead in the first set, then led at 4:3 and 6:5, before taking advantage of her third break point. The first set ended 7:5.
Pavlychenkova began better in the second set, but Kontaveit fought back to win 6:4.
Kontaveit, long thought as Kaia Kanepi's (WTA 89) successor, will now face local Madison Brengle (WTA 47).
Kanepi lost her second round match against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6:3 and 6:4. Kanepi was behind 3:0 in the first and 5:1 in the second set, but could not bounce back.
