No Dream Ending for 3rd-League Club in Cup Final
Tartu Santos, usually found playing in the third tier of Estonian league football, could not upset Estonian league champion FC Levadia in the final of the Evald Tipner Cup, the most important cup in Estonian football, on Saturday, losing 4-0.
Santos did have a far easier path to the final, only having to face one top league club, Narva Trans, which Santos beat on penalties. Levadia beat Nõmme Kalju, FC Flora and FC Infonet to advance.
Levadia dominated the game, as expected, and opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Vladislav Ivanov. Igemar Teever added a second in the 29th minute. Heiko Tamm scored in the 80th before Ivanov scored again in the 87th minute.
The loss is not all bad news for the amateur club, currently second in the Esiliiga B division. The club will at a minimum compete in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, as Levadia had already qualified for European competition.
Algimantas Liubinskas, the head coach of Santos and former Lithuanian national team head coach, said they will have to strengthen the team ahead of international competition, and will hope for a easy draw. He said Estonian football has come a long way in recent years, and has caught up with Lithuania.
