Tuuli Tomingas's gold in the women's 7.5 kilometer individual event at the European biathlon championships today is welcome news ahead of the Olympic Games, which are predicted to be barren for Estonian athletes.

At the competition, held in Nové Město na Moravě in the Czech Republic, 19-year-old Tomingas beat two Russian rivals for the number one spot, finishing in 22 minutes and 13 seconds. The result was over 16 seconds faster than that of second place Svetlana Mironova, and Tomingas missed only once, sport.err.ee reported.

Three other Estonians in the race finished 30th, 44th and 45th out of 64 contenders.

Another Estonian, Rene Zahkna, won gold at the same competition on Wednesday, pushing Russia's Ivan Alekhin to second in the 15 km men's individual event.
