100 Meter Dash on Skis to Be Held in Tartu
The first known international event to establish a world record in the 100-meter dash on skis will take place in Tartu on February 13.
The Tartu Ski Club and Estonian short-distance skiers are laying preparations for a new format, to be contested in the parking lot of the largest shopping center on the outskirts of the city.
There will be six lanes, and the style will be classical. Timekeeping will be to the nearest hundredth of a second.
Estonia's top skiers and top sprinters from Norway have said they will be attending, and there will be a separate event open to the public as well.
The originator of the idea and 2011 ski sprint world championship finalist Peeter Kümmel said: "Today's sprint competition format in skiing is more similar to middle distance running. I believe that the 100 m ski sprint will become just as eagerly awaited event as sprint events in track and field."
