Baruto Loses Out on Yokozuna Title
Sumo wrestler Baruto has suffered his third loss at the Haru-basho grand tournament, ruling out a chance to achieve the rank of yokozuna in the event.
Baruto's opponent, Kotoshogiku, charged at him, forcing the Estonian to the edge of the ring. Baruto tried to retaliate by lifting Kotoshogiku, but lost his balance and took a heavy slam onto the floor.
Baruto has now had nine victories and three losses at the Haru-basho, while Kotoshogiku has had eight wins and four losses.
Previously, Baruto has won 13 of 24 matches against Kotoshogiku, a Japanese-born wrestler who is 179 centimeters tall and weighs 171 kilograms. Kotoshigiku debuted in professional sumo wresting in 2002 and last year achieved the rank of ozeki, the same rank as Baruto.
Next, Baruto faces ozeki Harumafuji, a 27-year-old Mongolian who is 185 centimeters tall and weighs 126 kilograms. The Estonian has won 11 and lost 12 matches against him. Baruto was victorious in their most recent match in January.
