Rene Zahkna won gold at the European men's junior championships in the biathlon today, coming first in the 15 km individual event, sport.err.ee reported. The 19-year-old lost only one minute to penalties, missing one target.

Zahkna beat Russia's Ivan Alekhin by 21.7 seconds and also held off a push by bronze finisher Ukrainian Artem Tyshchenko.

No other Estonians were close in the event held in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic. Johan Talihärm was more than nine minutes off the pace, good for 48th, Kermo Sikk was 59th and Tarvi Sikk 65th.

Zahkna has now finished for the cycle, getting a gold, silver and bronze over his career in youth and juniors championships. He also has two silvers from the youth level of the Winter Olympics.
