1st Estonian National Bobsled Team Finishes Auditions Ahead of 2018 Olympic Games
Using a novel approach to finding members, Estonia hopes to say "we have a bobsled team" two weeks from now.
The Estonian national bobsled team, founded a month ago by Estonia's honorary consul in Monaco, has attracted 45 hopefuls in an open call for applications, with the team aiming for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Honorary Consul Mauro Serra said the drive to find team members was a great success, he said he did not hope for such interest.
The mix included many amateur athletes as well as top youth rowers, weightlifters, skiers and skaters.
The management will meet the candidates in a few weeks, with five or six chosen to begin training. A fall training camp in Austria has already been scheduled.
The team will be coached by Eddy Riva, who has shown good results as a member of a bobsled team that has won European and Italian championships. After summer training sessions and a bobsled exam, the team should enter its first competition in Austria in November.
The official presentation of the team is on June 19 in Tallinn.
