The basketball national team beat Ukraine 78:71 at the European Championship, having lost the first two games by wide margins.

Estonia began well, going in to a nine point lead before Ukraine rebounded to win the first quarter 15:14. Estonia had a horrid second quarter and it seemed the game was heading in the direction of the two previous games, a 55:84 loss to Belgium and a 57:80 loss to the Czech Republic.

But Estonia fought hard in the third quarter, coming from 10 points down to a six point lead. The last quarter was very close, with both sides battling hard, although Estonia held on.

Estonia is yet to face Latvia and Lithuania in the group. The Czech Republic, Belgium, Latvia and Lithuania all have two wins and one loss so far, Estonia has one win and two defeats and Ukraine has lost all three games.

The top four in the six-strong group, go in to the play-offs.

The match against Ukraine was the first victory in a European Championship since 1993. The 2001 tournament, when Estonia last qualified, ended in three defeats for Estonia. In 1993, topped its group, which included later champion Germany, but lost to Russia in the quarter-finals, before defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina to win sixth place at the tournament.
