Gerd Kanter won a silver medal at the European track and field championships, the 10th medal of his career, in a clutch performance.

In soggy conditions, he hurled the discus 64.75 meters on his third throw.

He had been dead last of 12 hurlers in the final after the first two throws, with a sub-60-meter best. Had he not broken 61 meters on the third throw, that would have been the end of his night, as the four bottom hurlers are eliminated at that point.

Gold went to German Robert Harting. Harting led throughout the event but needed his own third-round throw of 66.07 to remain ahead of Kanter.

There was little change after the third round, with Kanter not really threatening Harting, who sat one round and fouled his fifth and sixth throws.

Bronze went to Poland's Robert Urbanek (63.81), who beat countryman Piotr Malachowskit (63.54).
