Over 6,100 people have signed up in the early registration round of the 43rd Tartu Ski Marathon, taking place February 16, beating the previous record of 5,500 early-birds set last year.

Nearly 5,000 are volunteering to ski the 63 kilometer distance, with the rest opting for the easier 31 kilometer race, organizers said in a press release today.

The early registration round closed on Friday, but those who missed the deadline have until January 26 or February 15 to put their names forward, with the fees increasing during each registration period.

A maximum of 8,000 places for the longer track, and 2,000 for the 31 km track, are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Last year's marathon attracted over 8,500 enthusiasts.
