The Cabinet decided at its sitting today to give the Estonian women's epee fencing team 28,761 euros as a reward for their gold medal at the European championships last month.

The government's communication department said the money would come out of the Culture Ministry's reserves.

Although it will be divided among the four teammates, the payout per medal is relatively high compared with more prominent sports such as skiing, where championship winners have typically received around 30,000-40,000 euros. (Olympic gold has generally meant over 100,000 euros.)

The team, consisting of Irina Embrich, Kristina Kuusk, Erika Kirpu and Julia Beljajeva, made history in Zagreb in late June by becoming the first team gold and European title in the adult age group.
