Estonia's top tennis player Kaia Kanepi was knocked out in the third round of the US Open on Friday, losing 0-6, 4-6 to Germany's Angelique Kerber.

Kanepi (WTA 27) battled hard in the first game, but Kerber (WTA 9) won after four break points.

“After that game it felt like she got more and more confident and I was more and more insecure,” Kanepi said on her website.

In the following games of the first set, Kanepi could only manage eight points as Kerber swept to an easy win. Kanepi won the first game of the second set, but could not manage to hold on to the lead, losing the next three.

Two weeks after winning the bronze medal at the Moscow World Championships with 65.19 meters, Gerd Kanter has raised his game, throwing 67.02 at a Diamond League meet in Zurich on Thursday and 67.59 meters in Kohila, Estonia on Saturday.

The Diamond League result in Switzerland also handed the Estonian the overall victory in the tournament, with one more stage to go.

Kanter pushed Poland's Piotr Malachowski down to second and World Champion Robert Harting of Germany to third in the overall standings.

In Kohila, Kanter exacted revenge on Malachowski, who came in second, after the reverse order in Moscow.

The 2013 Finn Gold Cup, the world championships in Finn class sailing, held in Tallinn over the previous week, brought disappointment as local hopeful Deniss Karpak came only 14th.

Karpak's best results have been achieved when winds are stronger, the complete opposite of the weekend's weather conditions.

Jorge Zarif of Brazil won the tournament, followed by Edward Wright of Great Britain and Jan Pieter Postma of the Netherlands.

Javelin thrower Liina Laasma has qualified for the next track and field World Championships, to be held in Beijing in 2015.

Her winning throw of 62.50 meters in Kohila on Saturday is also the new national record, breaking the last record by over a meter.
