Novosjolov Wins World Epee Fencing Title
Estonia's Nikolai Novosjolov won the individual epee title at the World Fencing Championships in Paris on Monday, beating rival Gauthier Grumier of France 15-8.
The win by the 30-year-old Haapsalu native marks the greatest achievement in the history of Estonian competition fencing.
"The final battle turned out to be very difficult," Novosjolov told rus.err.ee soon after the win. "I was in very good shape and went to France with thoughts of medals. But until the end I didn't believe I would win the gold."
Novosjolov said that despite winning the world championship, he still has his eyes set on his main goal, which is taking home Olympic gold.
