U20 Basketball Home Team Disappoints at European Championships
The Estonian under-20s basketball team was relegated from the sport's top division in the European Championships currently taking place in Tallinn, after losing to the Czech Republic, 94-68, today.
Estonia came fourth in a five-strong group in the first round of the competition, only managing to beat the Czech Republic 75-58.
In the second round, playing for 13th to 20th place, of the 20-team competition, the home team beat Georgia 74-52, but lost to Sweden (77-69) and Bulgaria (68-58).
Today's interim-game defeat to the Czechs means that Estonia will face Georgia again to determine who claims last place.
As the last three teams are relegated to the lower division, Estonia needed to beat the Czech Republic today and win its last game to avoid the drop.
It's not all bad news for the Baltics, as Lithuania and Latvia are both going strong, having made it to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Italy and Montenegro respectively.
So far, Latvia has only lost one game out of nine, while Lithuania has had three losses and six victories.
The final will be played on Sunday at 20:15 local time at the Saku Suurhall arena in Tallinn.
