The Tallinn Marathon, which says it is one of the world's top 50 long-distance runs, is set to take place in the capital over the weekend, with record participation.

Close to 1,800 have so far registered for the full 42+ kilometers, beating last year's figure of 1,726, while the total number of runners, on all distances, is predicted to break the 21,000 barrier.

Organizers say the number of foreign runners has already passed last year's figure by 500, with people from every continent, except for Antarctica, taking part.

Besides the traditional 42.195 kilometer distance, the half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km run or walk, a four-kilometer run for children and a kids run are on offer.

The program begins at 13:00 on Saturday with the main prizes up for grabs on Sunday when the marathon distance runners begin at 9:00.

As in previous year, the starting gun sounds on Freedom Square, after which runners will be able to enjoy the scenic route to Pirita and back.

Those who are planning to drive through the city center, in the direction of Pirita and Viimsi, should take alternative routes, especially on Sunday. Although locals in Tallinn have become seasoned by traffic disturbances in the past few months.
