Kanepi Knocked Out of Sydney Tournament, Heads to Australian Open
Estonia's top tennis player Kaia Kanepi was beaten by Angelique Kerber in the second round of the Apia International Sydney tournament early this morning, but is staying in the country for the Australian Open next week.
Kerber is the same German player who sent Kanepi home from the US Open last year.
Today's match was closer than the 0-6, 4-6 defeat Kanepi suffered in August, with Kanepi putting up a fight in both sets and remaining positive at the end, losing 3-6, 4-6.
“The rhythm of the serve was very good and the game was OK,” Kanepi said on her website, adding that she tried a more offensive style of play, which has its risks.
Both Kanepi and Estonian former youth number one Anett Kontaveit will take part in the Australian Open, which begins on Monday, January 13 in Melbourne. Kontaveit's tournament will begin earlier as she will have to navigate through the qualifying rounds, which begin tomorrow.
