Sports association Kalev plans to rebuild the 58-year-old Kalev Stadium in Tallinn into a national arena that would seat 30,000 spectators.

"It's a long-term project but will hopefully finish in 2020," said Meelis Jukk, who is the physical development specialist of the Defense League, and whose boss, Meelis Kiik, is the president of the JK Tallinn Kalev football club. "Such a stadium could host the European athletics championships or even European football championships, as the games will be played on regional bases in the future. Moreover, it is a good arena for national dance celebrations."

The plan, however, is still in the very first stages, reported Postimees. The work group will hold its first meeting on December 15.

The stadium was built in 1956 and holds 12,000. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Tallinn Kalev of the Estonian football league.

It is also used as the venue for the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration, although there are some plans for a new venue for it by 2019.
