Piiroja Handed Suspended Sentence in Tax Evasion Case (2)
Former Estonian national football team captain has reached an agreement with Norwegian authorities and will receive an eight month suspended sentence for tax evasion while plying his trade in the country between 2004 and 2009.
“Lets be honest, I do not feel guilty, but I saw no point in a two-three year court battle against the Norwegian state, which would have also meant a media war and pointless stress,” he said in an Estonian Football Association press release today.
The Norwegian state had accused Piiroja of failing to declare 218,000 euros while playing for Fredrikstad, although the footballer, who is listed as a FC Flora player but is yet to play this season, said the sum is closer to 100,000 euros.
Piiroja said he has paid all owed sums to the Norwegian tax authorities.
