Wrestling Shortlisted for Olympic Games
In February, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) dropped wrestling from the list of core sports at the summer games, creating an additional spot for one sport that was to be picked from a list of eight, including wrestling. The executive board of the IOC announced on Wednesday that the list has been cut to just three, with wrestling still in the run.
The debate on which sport should receive the last spot and feature at the 2020 Olympics could have a great impact on Estonia, which has since 1920 picked up eleven medals in wrestling, including five golds.
According to sport.err.ee, FILA, the international wrestling federation, passed a number of changes to its laws, which have impressed the IOC.
Wrestling will have to compete against squash and baseball/softball, with the final verdict due in September this year.
London Olympic silver medalist Heiki Nabi will still compete at the 2016 games in Rio, Brazil, as any changes will not come into effect before that.
