Estonian-Born Player Signed by NHL's Maple Leafs
An Estonian-born player has been signed to a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The signing of Leo Komarov was announced by the NHL team on May 29. Originally selected in the sixth round of the NHL draft in 2006, Komarov spent the last three seasons playing for Moscow Dynamo of the Continental Hockey League.
Komarov, 25, was born in Narva, and moved to Finland in his youth. He has Finnish citizenship and was a member of the 2011 gold-medal team.
Last year the 179 cm, 90 kg forward had five goals, two assists and 49 penalty minutes for Moscow Dynamo, which won its first Continental Hockey League championship.
It is hoped that his encounters with trophy-winning teams will turn around the Maple Leafs' fortunes.
