National team leaps in FIFA rankings, crunch games ahead
The Estonian national football teams has jumped to position 78 on the FIFA football rankings, up four places.
Of Estonia's neighbors, Latvia is on 86 (up 1 place), Finland on 89 (up 1), Lithuania on 107 (up 3) and Russia on 31 (down 3). Estonia's group E opponents in qualifying for the 2016 European Championships are England, on 8th place in the ranking (up 1), Switzerland 17th (up 1), Slovenia 46th (up 3), Lithuania and San Marino 192nd (unchanged).
Argentina continues to lead the world rankings, with Belgium swapping places with Germany for second-third places.
Estonia faces important qualifying matches against Lithuania in Tallinn on September 5 and away against Slovenia three days later. Estonia is competing with Slovenia and Lithuania for third spot, although second, and automatic qualification, is also theoretically achievable.
England is leading the group with 18 points, followed by Switzerland on 12, and Slovenia on 9. Estonia has 7, Lithuania 6 and San Marino 1 point. All teams have played six matches with four left to play.
Estonia's last games are against England in London on October 9 and Switzerland at home on October 12.
Estonia's opponents for the 2018 World Cup qualifying group have also been announced, with Estonia facing Belgium (2nd in FIFA rankings), Bosnia and Herzegovina (28th), Greece (44th) and Cyprus 82nd) in group H.
