Kanepi Through to Second Round
Kaia Kanepi, Estonia's top tennis star, began the US Open Tuesday by knocking off Pauline Parmentier (WTA 74) of France, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.
The two had previously played twice, with Kanepi coming out on top on both occasions, and now a third for good measure. The 50th ranked Kanepi goes on to face Samantha Stosur (21st).

The Estonian national basketball team ended a tournament in Spain on a high note, beating Egypt 61-54 (34-28 half-time).
The team was in Spain, where the basketball World Cup will begin later this week, for a mini-tournament against World Cup participants, losing to Argentina and Senegal, and recording victories against Egypt and Senegal, against whom they played twice.

Two of the football national team's key players have seen developments in their club careers recently.
Goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko, 37, was given an ultimatum by his Russian employer Volga Nizhny Novgorod to either accept a 40 percent salary cut or face life in the reserves. All ten players who were handed the ultimatum chose the latter.
Pareiko said he is looking forward to the national team convening next week as the situation in his club has deteriorated.
Konstantin Vassiljev, 30, has signed for Polish top league team Piast Gliwice, according to the club. Vassiljev has played for two teams in Slovenia and one in Russia after leaving FC Levadia in 2007.
