Sports Round-Up: Rally Edition
WRC driver Ott Tänak is set to return to the big leagues next season after a one-year hiatus, saying he will participate in the second tier of the World Rally Championships and in three stages of the top division.
“Let's be honest here, this is my second and probably last chance,” Tänak said, speaking at a press conference today.
“I have been away from the top for more than a year and have, in that time, been able to study, which will help me prove myself in the coming year,” Tänak said.
Tänak said he has Markko Märtin and team M-Sport to thank for the second chance.
The 26-year-old was part of the WRC circuit for three years before taking a break this year.
Estonian drivers will take part in the gruelling Dakar rally after a nine-year pause.
Toomas Triisa and Mart Meeru have qualified for the motorcycle class of the competition, which will begin on January 5. Organizers say the 2014 rally will be the hardest yet.
The 13-day, 8,700-kilometer race was moved to South America in 2009 and takes place in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.
