Kanepi Moves to Quarterfinals in Brisbane
With deft ease, Kaia Kanepi (WTA 34th) defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (WTA 16th) at the Brisbane International on Wednesday, moving on to the quarterfinals of the year's first Women's Tennis Association event.
"I was playing very well today," Kanepi told WTA. "I started really well. Maybe my serve was the key today, and I was also feeling comfortable from the baseline. Thankfully we had the roof and the shade because it's a hot day today."
In a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the 20-year-old Russian, Kanepi only gave up three games and tied up the match in less than an hour.
Kanepi served up three aces, while her opponent made seven double faults. In the first set, Kanepi also had a first serve share of 79 percent as opposed to Pavlyuchenkova’s 33 percent.
Her next challenge will be against Andrea Petkovic (WTA 10th), who Kanepi beat last year in Dubai.
Reaching the highest WTA ranking of her career, 16th, last season, the 26-year-old Estonian won eight of her last 11 WTA matches, including a victory over the world's top racket, Caroline Wozniacki.
