Estonia Loses Last Home Football Qualifier
The Estonian national football team has lost its last home World Cup qualifying game against Turkey 0-2.
The home team opted for its usual tactic of banking on luck in defense, while waiting for the opposition's defense to slip up and allow Konstantin Vassiljev a shot, or Sergei Zenjov or Henrik Ojamaa to break through.
The strategy failed already on the 22nd minute, when Umut Bulut was allowed to head in a cross. It wasn't the first nor the last such opportunity for the visitors.
Turkey made it 0-2 straight after the beginning of the second half, after a combination of unlucky and incompetent defending allowed Burak Yilmaz to score the last goal of the match.
Estonia had little to play for, as qualification to the World Cup next year was not on the menu before the match, and partly it showed. Turkey, however, leapfrogged Hungary to the second spot in the group, which would mean playoff games, if they win their last game.
Hungary lost 8-1 in the Netherlands and Romania, Estonia's next opponent on Tuesday, beat Andorra by four to nil today.
