The Moscow track and field World Championships have ended, with the bronze medal from Gerd Kanter to show.

Rasmus Mägi, who renewed the Estonian 400-meter hurdles record a month ago to 49.19 seconds, did not make the final cut, falling in the semifinals.

His time of 49.40 was far faster than the 49.63 seconds he clocked in the quarterfinals in Moscow, where he was placed third in his heat, but was not enough to make it into the final round.

Heptathlete Grit Šadeiko, who also recently broke the Estonian national record, was on course to renew said record until suffering an ankle injury in the long jump event.

Mari Klaup, the other Estonian in the competition, finished 21st.

Estonian javelin thrower Risto Mätas threw 80.03 meters, coming in ninth, the first competitor not to make the final round.

Elsewhere in sports, the national basketball team has won its 2015 European Championships qualifying group after the Dutch team was disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.

Estonia will now have to beat Belarus over two games this week, then take on the winner from the Switzerland versus Bulgaria game for a place at the tournament.

At the end of July Estonia lost to Belarus, whose assistant coach is one of the all-time Estonian basketball greats Martin Müürsepp, 87-77 in a friendly game .

The Estonian football league is heating up, with the top four having faced each other over the weekend. FC Levadia continues to lead the table, beating fourth place Sillamäe Kalev 1-0.

Nõmme Kalju is second, on level with Levadia with 52 points, but has played one more game. It  kept up the pressure on Levadia by defeating FC Flora (in third with 44 points) 3-0.
