Conference Spotlights Psoriasis-Related Issues
A conference dedicated to the World Psoriasis Day was held in Tallinn on October 29, during which dermatologists introduced the different problems that people face while suffering from the auto-immune skin disease.
The disease currently affects an estimated 42,000 people in Estonia, ETV reported.
According to a recent study conducted by the Estonian Psoriasis Union, people suffering from psoriasis not only deal with disease-related
complications, but also physical and psychological stress, as many in the general public believe that the illness is contagious.
Passing psoriasis from one person to another through physical contact, however, is not possible - it is a hereditary, genetic disease. It is often triggered by stress, an infection, and even something as inconspicuous as a sore throat, Psoriasis Union spokespersons said.
People, who have psoriasis, often fear that society will not understand their condition. So many face difficulties at their workplace, said Georg Jurkanov, a Psoriasis Union chairman.
Although there are many treatment options available, the disease is known for its chronic, recurrent nature. That means that there is always the risk of symptoms returning once medications are discontinued.
