Kopli Explosion Sparks Criminal Investigation, 350 Additional Welding Gas Tanks Evacuated
The police have started a criminal investigation in connection with BLRT subsidiary Elme Messer Gaas, to determine whether workplace violations caused an explosion that killed one person and injured two Wednesday.
More than 18 hours after the blast tore into a production facility at the shipyard, the Rescue Service was called back to the scene yesterday morning to remove around 350 acetylene and propane tanks in the same building, a statement from the North Prefecture said.
The collapsed area was around 30 square meters. Rescue Service workers had to support the roof while evacuating the tanks as the construction is unstable.
The police is investigating whether occupational safety requirements were disregarded to a degree leading to a fatality. The two employees who were injured sustained severe burns.
Headquartered in Tallinn, BLRT is one of the region's largest shipyards with facilities in four countries.
