5 Surgeons Join Camp Bastion Field Hospital
A team of five Estonian Defense Force surgeons has begun work at the field hospital in Camp Bastion, the main British military base in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.
"Camp Bastion hospital has in the last five years been the busiest hospital in the war zone and is therefore considered to be the world’s best emergency room," said Capt. Maj. Jaan Kirss, chief general surgeon of the Estonian team. "It is important that Estonia’s largest hospitals have a team here as we will later bring valuable experience back home," he added.
Before starting work in Afghanistan, the Estonian medical staff trained with personnel from the United Kingdom.
During the three-month mission, both doctors and nurses will gain experience in dealing with war victims in the hospital’s emergency department and intensive care unit.
Camp Bastion's field hospital has a staff of nearly 400.
