Harju County Court has handed prison sentences to two women and six men for smuggling Vietnamese nationals from Russia to Estonia last October and November.

The six Estonian residents, who received illegal migrants at the Estonian border in the southeast and then transported them on to other EU countries, were found guilty of human trafficking. The sentences included a mix of real prison terms and probation.

The migrants included juveniles and the court said they were victims of human trafficking because they found themselves in a situation where they were forced to work in abnormal conditions.

Last year, border authorities caught 56 Vietnamese nationals, the biggest group of illegal migrants coming to Estonia.

Vietnamese have also submitted the most asylum applications, 24, to Estonia this year.
