Police had their hands full over the Midsummer weekend, but there were relatively few serious incidents.

"With regard to public order, the Jaanipäev holiday was comparable to a regular weekend. Calls came in involving fights and noise, but it was generally quite peaceful. There were no very serious crimes," said Kaido Saarniit, a managing police official with the North Prefecture.

Nevertheless, police caught around 100 drunken drivers over the three-day weekend.

"That is too much considering Estonia's small size. Looking at the 15 car accidents that occurred over the weekend, over half of the cases involved alcohol, unlicensed drivers or unbuckled seatbelts," Saarniit said.

"Unfortunately this morning, when it had already seemed that the holiday had passed without victims, we received a notification from Pärnu County that a driver had veered off the road and was killed. Initial information suggests speeding as a reason for the accident," Saarniit said.
