In one of the increasingly infrequent updates on a case gone cold, Police and Border Guard Board Director Elmar Vaher assured the public that investigators are still treating the 2012 murder of nine-year-old Varvara as a priority.

A number of possibilities are being investigated, one being that the murderer fled to Russia. The border crossing theory is also being actively followed up on, he assured.

"Top specialists are on the case and not just Estonia's. International specialists are also on the case, both in terms of forensic techniques and traditional investigating," Vaher said in Delfi

Varvara Ivanova disappeared on March 18 and was found dead near the Narva ice rink five days later. She had been killed in another location, and had also been sexually assaulted, examiners said in 2012.
