Capital's Deputy Mayor: Traffic Intensity Lower
Traffic counters on Tallinn's major intersections have shown a decrease in traffic volumes in recent weeks, according to Tallinn's deputy mayor, Taavi Aas.
“Figures show that there are [now] 20 percent fewer cars than in November and 10 percent fewer compared to December," said Aas, speaking at a press conference today.
“The most interesting fact is that we have fewer cars around-the-clock on Tallinn's streets now than in the summer, which in traffic volumes is normally the calmest period,” added Aas.
The city installed traffic counters at the 11 biggest intersections in April.
The deputy mayor said that more statistics will be published in the coming weeks when the city's partners, Tallinn University of Technology and Stratum OÜ, have completed their analysis of Tallinn's traffic.
Since January 1, public transport has been free of charge for registered residents of Tallinn and a number of new bus lanes have been created.
