Parliament puts an end to alcohol loan schemes
Parliament passed amendments to the Alcohol Act on Wednesday, banning the "renting" or "loaning" of alcohol.
The change means any form of handing alcohol to consumers for a financial gain is defined as a retail sale.
The Consumer Protection Board has opened a number of investigations into the renting of alcohol, which usually takes place during the national alcohol sale ban hours, from 22:00 to 10:00 in the morning.
After the ban on alcohol sales during the night was enforced, schemes to rent alcohol for free or at low cost, but with a later return fee or deposit popped up.
The amendments will take effect from July 1.
