Social Dem Resigns City Post in Protest of Centre Party
Tallinn's Mustamäe district elder and social democrat Lauri Laats resigned on January 5, as the Social Democratic Party (SDE) has withdrawn from Tallinn's coalition government in response to the Centre Party's funding scandal.
The social democrats' regional leadership suggested last week that fellow party members Laats and Deputy Mayor Vadim Belobrovtsev step down.
"I am sorry to have to resign my post for reasons unrelated to my actions,“ said Laats.
SDE Chairman Sven Mikser requested the resignation of Tallinn Mayor and Centre Party Chairman Edgar Savisaar as a prerequisite for staying with the coalition.
