Met office issues storm warning for Saturday, Monday
According to the met office, the storms about to reach Estonia will bring high winds of up to 28 meters per second on Saturday, and gusts of up to 30 meters per second on Monday.
The approaching cyclones will considerably raise seawater levels and topple trees, forecasters warn, advising people to shelter objects that could take flight in the wind.
The cyclone that will arrive at Estonian shores on Monday is said to be forming in the same area as did the largest storm to hit Estonia in the recent past, Cyclone Gudrun (or Erwin) in January 2005. Back then, the seawater level in Pärnu rose to +295 centimeters, inundating a considerable part of the town and many other coastal areas across the country.
Since 2005, Estonia has boosted the number of monitoring stations on its coast. Changes in the sea level can be followed here. As of Friday evening, the seawater level in Pärnu stood at +71, in Haapsalu +51, and in Tallinn +54 centimeters.
Another storm could hit Estonia in the middle of the week.
