Petition Urges Legislators to Push Through Same-Sex Marriage (5)

Along with a letter campaign, pressure on lawmakers is also mounting from proponents of the country's proposed gender-neutral cohabitation bill.

Today, a petition was presented to the Parliament bearing the signatures of 2,700 people. The title: "Thanks, but my traditional family doesn't require protection."

"We want all families to have the opportunity to organize their private lives in reasonable fashion. We want same-sex couples to be able to legitimise their cohabitation and raise their children in the knowledge that they are equal citizens. We want all Estonian people to have equal rights and opportunities."

Prominent signatories thus far include professors Rein Raud, legal scholar Katrin Nyman-Metcalf, Tallinn University professor Rainer Kattel, writer Aino Pervik, model Carmen Kass, media figure Anu Saagim, musicians Vaiko Eplik, Iiris Vesik, Karl-Erik Taukar, Mihkel Raud, writer Andrus Kivirähk, actors Juhan Ulfsak, Ivo Uukivi, Mari-Liis Lill, Evelin and Priit Võigemast, art scholar Eha Komissarov, and artist Jaan Elken.
