Fewer Women MPs, Equality Commissioner Disappointed
While the previous Parliament consisted of 24 female politicians, than the new one, according to preliminary data, will include only 20 women, which is a disappointing result, said Mari-Liis Sepper, commissioner of gender equality.
"Democratic governance means, in addition to other things, that different social groups should have an equal say in decision making," Sepper told uudised.err.ee.
The result is, nevertheless, not surprising, as there were few women at the top of electoral rolls, said Sepper.
To change the situation, Sepper called on women to give their votes to politicians of their sex, and that more of them should be bold enough to run for office.
For women to become more influential in politics, and in the long term, impact the gender balance of the representative body, at least 30 percent of Parliament should be composed of women, said the commissioner.
