Estonian Government Against Independent Kurdistan
Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said Estonia supports the unity of Iraq and Kurdistan, and should cooperate with the nation's central powers to stop the current security threat.
IRL politicians and security expert Eerik-Niiles Kross told Delfi on Sunday that there is little unity in Iraq - the nation is crumbling and there is no trust towards the government of al-Maliki, adding that the new constitution of Iraq, passed in 2004, gave Kurds many rights, which have been trampled on systematically by al-Maliki.
“If civil war in Iraq continues, which is likely, then why should we demand Kurds help keep together a foreign state at the expense of their own freedom?” Kross said.
Paet said it is very important for Iraq to guarantee the security and rights of Kurds, and the state should be led by a broad-based government.
The region of Kurdistan has been moving towards de-facto independence in the past few weeks since the breakdown of the Iraqi army in the face of rebel invasion from Syria.
