Parliamentary Speaker Plugs Democracy on Georgia Visit
Ene Ergma, Speaker of Parliament, made an official visit to Georgia on January 22, where she acknowledged the nation’s efforts in carrying out democratic reforms and battling corruption.
"Democracy is like a living organism that requires constant attention and development. [...] I request that our Georgian friends not grow weary," said Ergma, noting that the country is not only responsible for its own progress but also sets an example for many other post-Soviet nations.
At a meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Ergma stressed the importance of social cohesion and cooperation between the country's ruling coalition and its opposition parties.
Ergma also met with the Prime Minister of Georgia Nika Gilaur to discuss bilateral relations and get acquainted with the nation’s recently-finalized 10-year development plan.
Both politicians acknowledged that the new Tallinn-Tbilisi flight route to be opened in spring will create new incentives in transnational cooperation. Gilaur also expressed hope that the nations will continue developing joint projects, particularly in the fields of IT and higher education.
