96th anniversary of Treaty of Tartu marked with wreath laying ceremony
Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) laid a wreath earlier today at the War of Independence Victory Column in Tallinn to mark 96 years since the signing of the Estonian-Russian peace treaty in Tartu.
Also present at the ceremony were Lieutenant General Riho Terras, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, and Brigadier General Meelis Kiili, commander of the Estonian Defense League, as well as Minister of Social Protection Margus Tsahkna (IRL).
Today marks the 96th anniversary of the Treaty of Tartu, one of the first great achievements of the nascent Estonian republic’s diplomacy. The treaty ended the Estonian War of Independence, 1918-1920.
In the treaty, Russia recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Estonia for ever and unconditionally. The treaty also established the border between Estonia and Russia. However, the yet to be ratified border treaty between the two countries does not follow the borders agreed to in 1920.
