Savisaar's spirit is strong, says long-time friend and politician
Tallinn Mayor Edgar Savisaar's spirit is brave, but the road to recovery is long, says Savisaar's long-time friend, Center Party politician Aadu Must.
“He is better. I myself am an optimist and am happy to hear doctors say one or another organ has began to function normally. But we know that to lose a leg and to return from a very critical state – that means a very long road to take. But the spirit is brave,” Must told ETV.
Must visited Savisaar in the hospital in Tartu on the weekend, “He recognizes his friends and relatives. But it is smart to disturb him as little as possible. He talks less and prefers to listen to what is currently going on,” Must said.
The party said on Monday that the spread of the infection has been stopped, and many internal organs have recovered. Savisaar no longer needs help breathing around the clock.
Savisaar was taken to Tartu University Clinic on March 19 after suffering from an acute infection, which led to doctors amputating his leg above the knee. He was brought out of a medically induced coma at the end of last week.
Kadri Simson, the daughter of Must, has been named the party's temporary chairman with doctors saying Savisaar could return to work at some point.
