State Ponders Moving Power Companies Under Different Ministries
With Eest Energia divested of its share in Elering, EU law still requires one more step: that the government put the state-owned power company and the transmission system operator in the area of administration of different ministries.
In the future, Elering, which runs the power grid, could be under the MInistry of Economic Affairs and Communications while the Minstry of Finance would administer the state-owned Eesti Energia and its power plants.
Finance MInister Ligi told Postimees the government has not yet decided the exact distribution.
The purpose of the requirement is to minimize the chance that the network and a producer would conspire to create favorable conditions in what will starting in 2013 be a completely open electricity market.
